Sad Music, Dark Literature and Positive Thoughts 2

The new blog hang out for Harry…the Man.

And so, I’ve been enjoying a work free week

Working has a few major advantages over not working.  Whilst being able to pay your bills is probably the major reason, I thought that I would spend a few moments musing on a different advantage – without the stress of work the enjoyment of holiday time would not be so sweet.  I mean, how do you enjoy a holiday if you spend your whole life at leisure?  What are you doing on holiday that’s different to normal when it is the case that you never go out to work?

This week, Gloria and I have been on holiday from our respective employers and have thoroughly enjoyed the time.  This is in spite of us not venturing very far from home.

Apart from being on holiday from work, one thing that we don’t do every week is to buy takeaway food.  And so, we have eaten out every day and loved every mouthful of the experience.

We’ve only eaten once today – this evening at the local Indian (or is it Bangladeshi?) restaurant.  We both had a starter and both of us had a main course but neither of us had space in our bellies for pudding.

Actually, I did venture into the workplace today as I had to pick something up that had been delivered there this morning.  A few people spoke about work things to me while I was in the office.  I pretended to listen intently but my brain is usually able to ignore work things when I’m not on duty.  It’s an awesome talent and helps to keep me on the right side of high anxiety.  One of my colleagues even moaned that he worked late last night and suffered the same fate that I did last week.

Time for a cup of tea, I reckon.  And praise be to God that I’m free to do all of this.

Late night at work – and still no mini cocktail bar

Yesterday for me was a really annoying day at work.

A La Oficina Anoche

Man, I need to go home

I won’t bore everyone with the details so I’ll just throw out one phrase that I don’t want to see again when I’m the only one left working in the office late at night – “You can only specify the READPAST lock in the READ COMMITTED or REPEATABLE READ isolation levels”

In case any SQL experts are passing…no, I don’t need any help with this now.

Where the heck were you last night when I did need you?

It was several months ago that I told the Operations Director and the Customer Services Manager that I would work better if there was a mini cocktail bar behind my desk.

There’s enough space between my chair and the window for one.  I suppose that the reason that my request has never been fulfilled is that they’re worried that I’d never go home; but I definitely would.

If I stayed in the office I might end up doing a lot more work than I’m paid to do.

The cleaners were vacuuming around me at 8 o’clock and I was nowhere near finished.  ‘Oh well, I’m locking the building and setting the alarm again,’ I thought (like most evenings).

One of the cleaners said to me that I must really love my job.  “I wouldn’t be working at this time.”

“You’re here!” I pointed out to him.

I was prepared for yesterday being a late one, but Señora SQL Replication (actually, she probably isn’t Spanish) added an hour or two onto my anticipated workday.  I’d cooked my tea the night before of lamb chops, boiled new potatoes and peas and came home to add a couple of slices of bread and two fried eggs.  And when I did get to finally eat it, I had started to feel quite hungry and the plate failed to satisfy.  I ended up eating too many biscuits with my evening RedBush tea.

Oh well, I managed to leave early today after speaking to the Senior Project Manager.  I wonder who’s locking up the office tonight?  Actually, I’m not really that bothered.

Moan, moan, moan – the British way

I think the one thing that every one of us has in common is that we each have something that we can feel bad about.

Emo Kids - get happy!

Some people never know when they are well off

In some way or other, life is unfair to pretty much everyone.  Well, okay, some people get better breaks than others.  However, a sense of perspective is something that few of us have.

At least I haven’t been born in a country where wrong doings are punished by public flogging.  Nor have I been born a girl to either be married and pregnant to a man old enough to be my grandfather while being still at the an age that is below the age of consent in European countries, or to be raped on the order of an unelected all male counsel for some crime committed by a relative.  And I’m not an elderly person facing starvation because I find it hard to do the only available but poorly paying work because my body is collapsing with age.

I could go on about the life of the majority of the World’s inhabitants, but I won’t.

I watch television documentaries and news broadcasts and see people moaning about their lot while all of the time I watch everything as if through the eyes of one of these people I mention.  They’d love to live on the benefits breadline in Britain if that meant that they lived in a house with a spacious enclosed garden, full indoor sanitation and warm clothes.  Sorry, with this image that I describe I am thinking about a particular family that I saw this year on BBC News.

…Okay, I won’t go into a full rant here.

I do listen to gothic inspired music. One of my five favourite albums is Pornography by The Cure, for example. I can relate to the words as bad things have happened to me in the past. But, I’m not unique in having a bad past. I have a right to feel depressed about things that have happened to me but there is a lot that makes me feel grateful and happy as well.

Let’s just say, caring about everyone else in the World helps you to appreciate the few blessings that you do have.

So, to this WordPress thing…

Blogging!  I love blogging – well, I love the interaction.

Blogging for me started tentatively when teased by sites such as MySpace, Facebook and DeviantArt.  Well, I left those sites long ago for various reasons – actually, pretty much the same reason.  They seemed to have more than their fair share of infantile and argumentative people.  Maybe that’s an unfair assessment on these sites, but the people that kept contacting me on these sites were quite infantile and argumentative.

Blogging became my favourite waste of time when I started my blog on MyOpera.  MyOpera had its share of odd people, but it also had a large amount of really great and interesting people.  The reasons for the types of people who blogged at MyOpera was partly owing to the history of the Opera browser.  There were those dark days when Microsoft Windows had a near total monopoly on the World operating system battlefield and Opera was the only mainstream browser to bother with users of Linux.  There were other factors as well that shaped the Opera community but it is enough to say that MyOpera had a great community going.

And then, MyOpera was no more.  They helped those of us who loved the activity of blogging to migrate our old blogs to WordPress or other suitable platforms.  For posterity, my old MyOpera blog Depressing Music, Dark Literature and Positive Thoughts is preserved here at WordPress.

I remember being asked just once about the title of my blog.  The title described me when I started this blog and the title still rings quite true to this day.  I listen to mainly depressing music, I read literature that is sometimes dark in nature but I try to think positively.

Back to this blog.  Many of my current WordPress friends were also MyOpera bloggers.  Like me, I notice that they also seem to have struggled to maintain regular blogging on WordPress.  The old MyOpera blogging community has sort of vanished in the WordPressSphere.  That I’ve posted only nine blog posts in 22 months tells its own story.

So, what for the future of this blog?  A blog on cooking, perhaps?  No, I’m not a great cook.  How about me giving you all some inspirational thoughts and stories?  Hardly a good idea when I’ve struggled to get going at times over the last few years.  How about a blog on my favourite books and albums?  Nah, that could get a little tedious.

No, I don’t need to think of a new theme for this blog.  I just need to blog whilst in the main avoiding reference to all of the bad things that have happened in recent months.

Hopefully, I’ll get to meeting some new online blogging friends at WordPress and become part of post-MyOpera-scene blogging revival.  Will this post-MyOpera-scene be as good as the post-Punk scene…?
